Gully Howard Technical invite you to join us raising awareness of Asbestos.
Although a huge amount of work has been done by varying organisations to raise awareness of asbestos, there is still a lot to be done and we can’t afford to take our foot off the pedal!
Asbestos doesn’t just affect tradespeople, builders, electricians, plumbers and more. It can affect your child, your brother, your neighbour, a stranger you pass in the street because asbestos is found in an incredibly varied amount of materials in your home, office building and school.
Asbestos is a natural fibre that was used in tiles, glue, walls, floors, ceilings, insulation and more! It has the potential to cause a range of serious and fatal diseases when materials containing asbestos are disturbed or damaged. So whether replacing guttering, pinning a picture to a wall or scraping artex from a ceiling, you should know how best to proceed should you identify a potential hazard.
Having awareness of asbestos related illnesses can help to understand the dangers of exposure; not to scare you but to help you avoid any unnecessary risks of exposure .With the right knowledge asbestos can be managed safely for long periods of time. When the time comes it can be safely removed by licensed asbestos professionals.
Every week approximately 20 tradesmen die from asbestos-related disease
If you carry out work on a building that was built or refurbished before the year 2000, you could have been exposed to asbestos
Asbestos-related diseases kill more people than any other single work related illness
Asbestos-related diseases can take 15-60 years to develop
Asbestos-related diseases are currently responsible for more than 4500 deaths a year in the UK and the number is still rising
Asbestos containing materials (ACMs) in good condition and left undisturbed cannot cause ill-health
The greater the disturbance of ACMs and the longer the duration, the greater the risk to health
Asbestos can cause Mesothelioma, Asbestosis, Asbestos-related lung cancer and Pleural thickening.
