The First World War fought on an enormous industrial scale, radically changed the industrial workforce. Over 600,000 women took on previously male-dominated roles in the industry; working in labs, mills and factories – sometimes in hazardous circumstances.

These hazardous circumstances include the Turner Brothers factory in Trafford Park, Manchester, where female workers were producing asbestos mattresses!
