Gully Howard Technical’s qualified and experienced Occupational Hygienists are trained in the testing and examination of Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems. We can carry out LEV testing for you, as well as offering LEV training. This training ranges from a one day LEV Awareness Course, to
Additionally we can provide LEV consultancy services.
What is LEV?
LEV extracts airborne hazardous substances at source, thus minimising employees’ exposure. It is a vital tool in controlling worker’s exposure to harmful chemical agents such as dusts, fumes, fibres, vapours, gases and mists. Workplaces which conduct woodworking, welding, paint spraying, chemistry or manufacturing are examples of industries likely to use LEV.
There are many different types of LEV systems which are normally characterised by their hood design (e.g. fume cupboard). Most systems comprise of a hood (air extraction point) connected via ducting to an air cleaner (filter). Air is sucked through the system via a fan and motor unit and the filtered air is typically discharged externally.
LEVs are installed to protect worker’s health and thus they need to be routinely checked to ensure their performance has not deteriorated. The thorough examination and testing of LEV systems is a mandatory requirement of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations.
The COSHH Regulations requires LEV systems to be thoroughly examined and tested every 14 months. However, certain LEV systems controlling high risk substances require more frequent testing.
The examination procedure includes a series of measurements such as the hood face velocity, the air velocity in the ducts and static pressures across the whole system.
Measurements are compared against the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) recommended guidance values and the original commissioning data. Recommendations are provided in the test report, if necessary, detailing the actions needed to bring the LEV system back to optimum performance.
